I've found my people! I fell for them when working at Stourhead, they have a collection so I started taking sneaky cuttings. Now I have loads of them. Unique, Regal, scented leaf, even zonale! I love them and have two plant theatres dedicated to them plus quite a few more.
I think it plays to my collecting obsession, there's just so many and they're so different, must get just one more....
I love pelargoniums, especially the scented-leaved varieties. I've got an unusual pelargonium papilionaceum, which the nursery told me came from a cutting from the King's own garden (although they had no paperwork to prove it 😅 ). My only problem is where to store them frost-free every winter as all my space indoors is taken up by my house plants.
I also have a soft spot for the scented leaf varieties. My plan is to cut mine back quite hard so that I can pack a lot into my Keder greenhouse which I keep just frost free. I also take cuttings that spend the Winter in a slightly heated propagator and get potted on as soon as the weather starts to warm up in March. I'm sure papilionaceum is lovely, it sounds as though it should look a bit like a butterfly.

It's mostly grown for giant leaves rather than flowers so a pelergonium of choice for anyone into jungle gardens. Ive got a summer house that stays frost free where I put my palm trees, bananas and citrus over winter but it's quite dark so I always lose several pelargoniums there every winter.
